“It was an opportunity to play the straight man”: Johnny Depp Starred in One of His Worst Movies Ever Only to Work With an Oscar Nominated Actor He Revered

One of the most important aspects of an actor’s job is determining whether or not the project they are being offered is worth their time. While most actors base their decisions on the storyline, Johnny Depp often makes his choices based on the opportunity to work with someone he admires. This was the case when he decided to star alongside Christopher Walken in the film Nick of Time.

Although the movie ultimately failed at the box office and is considered one of Johnny Depp’s worst films, he saw it as a chance to work with his idol. In the 1995 thriller-action film, Depp played the role of Gene Watson, an accountant who is tasked with assassinating the state governor within 75 minutes to save his daughter’s life. Despite the negative reception, Depp had no regrets as his main goal was achieved – working with Christopher Walken and director John Badham.

During an interview, Depp explained that he took on the role not for the money or success of the film, but because he wanted to collaborate with Walken and Badham. He believed that the script had a Hitchcockian feel and saw it as an opportunity to break away from his reputation for playing eccentric characters. Although Nick of Time grossed only $8 million at the box office, far below its $33 million budget, Depp was satisfied with his experience on the film.

Depp’s second collaboration with Walken came four years later in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. The film, based on Washington Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, was much more successful, both critically and commercially. Depp played the role of police officer Ichabod Crane, while Walken portrayed the Headless Horseman. Sleepy Hollow grossed over $206 million worldwide, more than doubling its $100 million budget.

With the success of Sleepy Hollow, Depp was able to forget about the disappointment of Nick of Time and relish in the fact that he achieved his goal of working with Christopher Walken.
