Johnny Depp became a household name around the world after leading the iconic Pirates of the Caribbean franchise that grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide. Fans fell in love with his character, Captain Jack Sparrow, who uses wit and deceit to get his way. The trickster with slurred speech prefers to use his words over force to overcome the hurdles in the Caribbean, but such is his nature that whatever comes out of his mouth has little meaning.

In real life, however, Depp couldn’t be more different than his most popular character, and words and promises mean a great deal to him. Even his ex-wife, Amber Heard might attest to the same.

What Johnny Depp Promised Amber Heard Before Their Divorce

The romance between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard that first sparked during the filming of The Rum Diary (2011) eventually led to a controversial conclusion, with both finding each other at opposite ends in court after they split in 2016.

In 2022, the Pirates of the Caribbean star battled with his ex-wife in court over an op-ed she wrote in 2018, which supposedly suggested he abused her. The highly-publicized legal fight brought forward many intimate details of their rocky relationship, including a promise from Depp to Heard.

Depp’s attorney Camille Vasquez during cross-examination questioned Heard about why he hadn’t looked at her the whole trial.

“You know exactly why Mr. Depp won’t look at you. He promised you he would never see your eyes again, is that true?” Vasquez asked (via Law&Crime Network). Heard replied, “I don’t recall that.”

An audio recording from a San Francisco hotel room in 2016 was played and court members and the world heard Depp saying:

“I am nothing to you, and I will always be nothing to you. You will not see my eyes again.”

Depp certainly stayed true to his words even during the trial. Further, after their legal battle, the former couple seemingly moved on to greener pastures with Heard agreeing to a legal settlement with her ex-husband.

Why Johnny Depp Once Spent $3M Blasting Ashes From Cannon

This wasn’t the first instance the world saw Depp go to extreme lengths to keep his word. In 2017, it emerged that Depp allegedly spent $3 million firing the ashes of late author Hunter S Thompson from a cannon.

The 60-year-old played Raoul Duke in the 1998 comedy Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Raoul is the partially fictionalized author’s surrogate character and is the main star in many of Thompson’s stories. After the movie, Depp and Thompson remained in touch until his death, and the Edward Scissorhands actor made sure to give his friend the farewell he always wanted.

“All I’m doing is trying to make sure his last wish comes true,” said Depp at the time (via The Guardian). “I just want to send my pal out the way he wants to go out.”

While many found the practice questionable, Thompson’s widow, Anita, insisted the eccentric writer loved explosions.
