Johnny Depp and Hunter S. Thompson shared a very close friendship. The actor played the author in his 1998 adaptation Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and his portrayal of the complicated psyche of Thompson made many think that Depp understood him on a level that very few have been able to. The actor had been a fan of his work long before working on the adaptation, mentioning that they were as close as two people could be. That was until Thompson passed away in 2005.
