Martin Scorsese bestows incredibly high praise on one of his frequent collaborators, Leonardo DiCaprio, calling him “one of the greatest actors in history.” To date, Scorsese and DiCaprio have collaborated on six movies, including Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, and The Wolf of Wall Street. In their latest collaboration, Killers of the Flower Moon, DiCaprio plays the greedy and gullible Ernest Burkhart, a pitch-perfect performance that’s garnered a lot of praise and is a near lock to net him his seventh Academy Award nomination for acting.

For Martin Scorsese movies, DiCaprio received an Oscar nomination for The Aviator and The Wolf of Wall Street.

While accepting Best Picture and Best Director at the National Board of Review awards (via IndieWire), Scorsese singled out DiCaprio as “one of the greatest actors in the history of movies.” During his acceptance speech, the director reflected on DiCaprio’s career, their many collaborations together, and explained what makes him such a great actor. He couldn’t make it here tonight for a really good reason… He’s right in the center doing prep for Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film. Originally, Bob De Niro told me about Leo DiCaprio when he worked with him in This Boy’s Life. He said, “You gotta work with this kid one day.” And at that time, De Niro never really recommended anyone to me. So in 23 years, we made six pictures together now… I have faith in him. I know I can depend on him. His immersion in the process of the person who’s trying to play within the story is full. His fearlessness is something which has given me life when I make a film.[There is] a maddening, relentless search for what might be the truth of every character he plays. You know, he’s a genius in terms of cinema really is, and you could see it in the face. You could see it not only through the eyes, but he has the face of cinema. He doesn’t have to say a word. It’s all there. You could see it in all his films that he’s made going from This Boy Life to the Gilbert Grape picture, which was wonderful, all the way through the extraordinary The Revenant.By the time we did Aviator and Departed, I felt a kind of resurgence of my own certain resurgence of my own energy, really, and in many ways, Killers of the Flower Moon is a culmination of all that work together. All the way up to the end when he’s at the witness stand. I knew I could just hold the camera on him and not cut away because I knew he would convey everything that was at that decisive moment. And we did one take, and I was moved on set, and that was it. One take, so I see him digging deeper into the corners of a human experience that many of us really can’t even bear to even acknowledge the weakness and the delusions of this guy in the film. You hate him but you tend to also love him… all the contradictions of what it is to be human. I really know he’s one of the truly one of the greatest actors in the history of movies. I thank him for everything.

Will Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio Reunite For A Seventh Movie?

Long before Killers of the Flower Moon released last October, it was reported that Scorsese and DiCaprio were reuniting for their seventh feature film. The planned project is based on the nonfiction book The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder by David Grann, the same author behind Killers of the Flower Moon‘s source material. The 2023 book tells the tale of the HMS Wager and the mutiny that took place after the ship’s wreckage in 1741.

However, The Wager probably won’t be Scorsese or DiCaprio’s next project. As the director mentioned during his acceptance speech above, DiCaprio was cast in Paul Thomas Anderson’s next movie, which is set to shoot this year. It’s also unlikely that The Wager will be Scorsese’s next project.

Scorsese’s next movie is about Jesus, as the director recently confirmed. The project is based on the book A Life of Jesus by Shūsaku Endō, who also wrote the source material for Scorsese’s 2016 film Silence. It’s unknown who will star in his Jesus movie, but whenever Scorsese is casting a film, DiCaprio is a likely candidate. It’s currently unknown if Scorsese and DiCaprio will reunite for The Wager or another project, but given their long and fruitful partnership, a seventh collaboration is bound to happen sometime.
