Robert Downey Jr. Maybe The Real Reason Behind John Boyega Rejecting To Play Kang After Jonathan Majors Firing

Kang the Conqueror was supposed to be the next big thing for Marvel after Thanos. However, before the ship could properly pick up the pace, winds of controversy and tides of misfortune have already drowned it. Portrayed by Jonathan Majors till now, it is being reported that the character is being written out.

However, instead of rewriting the Avengers: Kang Dynasty and having Kang removed, Marvel can do it the Marvel way aka replace the actor. One possible fan-favorite actor who can don the mantle is John Boyega, however, recently the actor denied being interested in the opportunity that might have something to do with Robert Downey Jr.

Despite Being A Fan-Favorite Choice, John Boyega Does Not Want To Play Kang

After Jonathan Majors was found guilty of one count of assault and one of harassment in his recent domestic abuse trial,  Marvel dropped the actor completely.

Slated to be one of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest villains Kang the Conqueror, his legal troubles have thrown Marvel into a frenzy since they already apparently had everything planned out for future projects, where Kang was supposed to be the center of everything (via The Independent).

Now as The Hollywood Reporter reports Marvel is seeking to redevelop its complete storyline while writing Kang out. However, fans believe recasting Majors would be the best choice and one of the top contenders is the Star Wars star John Boyega.

However, when a fan asked him on X to play Kang next, the actor responded with a gif featuring Shrek’s Donkey repeatedly shaking his head in a tweet.

While the actor has time and again shown interest towards indie films instead of franchise ones, his disinterest in portraying a Marvel character can be because of Robert Downey Jr., for he thinks it is impossible to top what RDJ achieved as Iron Man.

John Boyega Won’t Play Kang As It Would Be Hard To Top Robert Downey Jr.

While Jon Boyega hasn’t directly revealed why he doesn’t want to play Kang, the next big thing for Marvel, it might be something to do with the comments he made last year while speaking to Men’s Health.

When asked if he would ever want to join Marvel since there were rumors floating around that time about him secretly wanting to join the billion-dollar-grossing universe, he replied,

“That’s not in the vision for me now. I want to do nuanced things… I want to donate my services to original indie films that come with new, fresh ideas, because I know it’s real hard to top Iron Man in that universe.”

While it is true that it would be hard or impossible for any actor to top what Robert Downey Jr. did for MCU, time and again there would be actors who would love to try. However, Boyega seems to have totally decided against trying itself.

Even though RDJ and his legacy would forever continue to remain synonymous with MCU, fans would nonetheless, love to see Boyega as Kang or any other Marvel character. While none can compete with Downey, many fans seem hopeful Boyega being a talented actor can create his own legacy within the MCU, if he wishes to.
