Some outfits make sense, and some don’t. But really, what one person thinks “makes sense” in the sartorial world is relative because the most unconventional combos are the best (albeit the most confusing). But as someone from Minnesota who lives in New York now, Nicole Kidman’s latest look left me with raised eyebrows. I was, in short, confused, because of those…shoes.

Kidman has been busy in New York City filming for her upcoming movie, Babygirl — I, for one, cannot wait for this because I love myself a Kidman movie — and said outings have given me (and you) the most no-brainer winter outerwear around: a sleek, camel-colored wrap coat that’s either made of cashmere (chic) or wool (warm). While the snaps of Kidman on set haven’t offered a look at what’s underneath that outerwear essential (I guess we’ll have to wait until the movie is released), we have seen her footwear, and while her shoes last week made complete and utter sense — Uggs, which are like a hug — this week’s simply do not.

Kidman paired her wool wrap coat with coordinating beige square-toe ballet flats. Say what! Her pair was simple and extremely versatile, and if it were summer — or even spring! — I’d be wearing them tomorrow. But alas, it’s basically almost winter, and ballerinas this time of year simply make no sense, which is why I called her outfit unhinged — in the best way.

That said, I fully support Kidman’s decision to wear flats, and TBH, I think I might do the same (with tights, of course). Growing up in Minnesota, I’m used to the cold and have developed thick skin against the brisk chill that NYC brings, so much so, I don’t think I’ve ever actually worn a real down coat since living in the Big Apple. (Yes, my fiancé thinks I’m from another planet, and no, I won’t change. I can only imagine the shock on his face if he saw me in flats this time of year.)

But whether you’re ready to wear Kidman’s unexpected winter shoes now or later, they’re a wise choice nonetheless given their timeless, versatile, and easy nature. Shoes these days can quickly get complicated, but the actress’ are not, and that’s exactly why they’re a breath of fresh air. Not to mention, ballet flats are perfectly on trend and comfy, making them a total must-have.
