Former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms has opened up on his surprise departure from CBS Sports, where he spent 26 years as an analyst following his playing career.
Phil Simms, along with former Cincinnati Bengals star quarterback Boomer Esiasion, have both left the “The NFL Today” on CBS. Another former NFL MVP-winning QB, Matt Ryan, and three-time Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt are taking their places.
“The NFL Today” lineup will bring back James Brown, former NFL wide receiver Nate Burleson and Hall of Fame head coach Bill Cowher. As for Esiason, he’ll continue working with Gregg Giannotti on their popular “Boomer and Gio” New York sports radio program.
Simms addressed his departure from CBS Sports during a new interview with Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports. Simms stated that he understands the trend of businesses replacing veteran talents with younger personalities:
“Like people say, they’re always looking for the next person. I’ve heard they like young people, too. O.K…Whatever the bosses want, that’s what they do. And I understand that.”
In the interview with McCarthy, Phil Simms also stated that he’ll focus on the “Simms Complete” podcast that he co-hosts with son and former NFL QB, Matt Simms. Phil also said that Esiason will appear on their podcast.
Phil Simms Understands The Shift In Sports Media
Whether sports fans like it or not, major sports media outlets everywhere across the world are choosing to cut ties with long-tenured and notable talents, regardless of their popularity and career accomplishments.
NBC Sports moved on from Al Michaels after the 2021 season, opting to promote Mike Tirico to their “Sunday Night Football” broadcasts. Just last year, ESPN conducted a long list of layoffs that included Steve Young, Suzy Kolber, Jeff Van Gundy, Matt Hasselbeck and Jalen Rose.
Simms was a polarizing analyst at CBS Sports, but replacing his in-depth knowledge and analysis is easier said than done. Fans synonimize his voice with so many unforgettable NFL moments in the 21st century.
The good news for Simms’ fanbase is that he’s not going away from sports journalism. He still has plenty ore to offer on his podcast.
