(X) “I Know I Used To Be Crazy”: Miley Cyrus Admits Feeling ‘Guilt And Shame’ Over Her Controversial Actions In Her 20s

Miley Cyrus has caused many controversies

Miley Cyrus is often featured on the lists of child stars who lost their way or courted controversies as they grew up. Her moves have been attributed to her desperate attempt at breaking out of the ‘sweet and adorable’ image she had on screen as a teen sensation on Disney’s ‘Hannah Montana’.

Now, the pop star is opening up about her struggle to reinvent herself post the ‘Hannah Montana’ fame and dealing with the “harsh” judgments due to the scandals along the way.

Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Being Harshly Judged In Her 20s

For Miley Cyrus’ fans, who had loved her since she became the lovable Hannah Montana at the age of 13, seeing her persona change in her 20s was shocking. She certainly hit the media like a wrecking ball. As a consequence, she faced severe backlash and trolling as a barrage of controversies erupted.

Talking about those years, the 30-year-old singer told British Vogue, “I carried some guilt and shame around myself for years because of how much controversy and upset I really caused. Now that I’m an adult, I realize how harshly I was judged. I was harshly judged as a child by adults and now, as an adult, I realize that I would never harshly judge a child.”

But what motivated Miley Cyrus to go to extreme lengths? “I was creating attention for myself because I was dividing myself from a character I had played. Anyone, when you’re 20 or 21, you have more to prove. I’m not my parents. I am who I am,” she explained.

Miley admitted that those judgments affected her as a 20-year-old girl. However, upon reflection, she knows how to take all the criticisms in stride.  And, a lyric from her yet-to-be-released song perfectly captures her state of mind: “I know I used to be crazy. I know I used to be fun. You say I used to be wild. I say, I used to be young.”

How Miley Shed Her Hannah Montana Personality With Controversies

Miley Cyrus became the center of controversies as she became an adult. From being a victim of leaked ɴuᴅᴇ pH๏τos to being morally policed for posing topless for a magazine, there were too many problems surrounding her life. She took matters into her own hands and became unapologetic about what she wanted to do.

Her Teen Choice Awards performance of ‘Party in the U.S.A.’ in 2009 started a wildfire of criticism for over-Sєxualized behavior on stage. Then came the substance abuse stage, however, she is sober now.

Another major scandal involving Miley was her 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance where she twerked alongside Robin Thicke.

Now, Miley is quite comfortable posing ɴuᴅᴇ in videos and owning her true self on social media also. She knows controversies are a part and parcel of celebrity life and she doesn’t want to explain herself to anyone but live the best life possible while making music.
