Donald Glover’s New Series Has Dethroned the Dominant Reacher at Prime Video

Reacher is still a top dog, but not the dominator of Prime Video.

A new dominant show has taken over this past weekend. Donald Glover’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith has dethroned Alan Ritchson’s Reacher, which had been the number one show on Amazon Prime Video for weeks since its second season premiered last December.

Unlike Reacher, Mr. and Mrs. Smith received its first season drop all at once at Prime Video. Despite not having the longevity of having weekly episode releases, the debut season of the remake of the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie movie has 1.67 billion minutes watched. Reacher has 857 million, a drop from the billion it had a few days before losing its throne.

The reimaging of the 2005 film sees two agents (Glover and Maya Erskine) getting matched by their new employer to go undercover as a married couple. In each episode, they receive a new mission, which tests their abilities as spies and a newly married couple.

While they try to keep things professional, they start to develop feelings for one another. Alongside these missions are big guest stars like Parker Posey, Paul Dano, Ron Perlman, John Turturro, and more.

The current top 10 of Prime Video is currently no competition for Mr. and Mrs. Smith as word of mouth has started to spread since its Friday (February 2) premiere.

The top five most viewed series, starting below the prior number one, goes down to the adult animated series Hazbin Hotel (694 million), Nicole Kidman’s Expats (566 million), and the time-traveling Korean series Marry My Husband (496 million). From there, dramatic drops go to older series that have been sitting at the bottom of the pool while new shows overtake them, like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (181 million).

While it does not hold the most subscribers, Prime Video continues to outmatch every other service, first with Reacher and now with Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Rival services don’t have anything that matches the views of the spy thriller comedy, but some surely are competing.

Apple TV Plus struck gold with its new series Masters of the Air (999 million), Paramount Plus has South Park (222 million), Disney Plus found success with Percy Jackson and Olympians (476 million), Max continues the mystery with its current hit True Detective: Night Country (460 million), and Netflix’s cartel drama Griselda still dominates (829 million).

Mr. and Mrs. Smith has all eight episodes available on Prime Video.
