SUMMARY

The action disaster genre is making a comeback with Greenland: Migration, starring Gerard Butler, and the premiere of Twisters.

Greenland: Migration is the sequel to the 2020 film Greenland, with many original cast members returning.
The success of Twisters could help draw attention to Greenland: Migration, as both films are in the same genre.

Plenty of movie genres are making comebacks as of late (like romantic comedies), and one subset of the action genre also seems to be returning following the news of an upcoming Gerard Butler sequel. Butler previously starred in (and produced) the 2020 action film Greenland, directed by Ric Roman Waugh and written by Chris Sparling.

The movie centers around a family, with Butler playing John Garrity, the patriarch, who is trying to survive a deathly comet headed for Earth. Now, a sequel — Greenland: Migration — is in development, confirming one genre’s return to cinema.

Aside from Butler, the cast of Greenland includes Morena Baccarin as Allison Garrity, David Denman as Ralph Vento, Hope Davis as Judy Vento, Roger Dale Floyd as Nathan Garrity, and Scott Glenn as Dale.

Many of these stars are expected to return in the upcoming sequel, including Butler, Baccarin, and Floyd, and Waugh will direct the film, which will likely premiere in 2025. With the announcement of Greenland: Migration‘s starting filming date and another upcoming action movie, one genre is finally experiencing a revival in Hollywood.

Now that Greenland: Migration is about to start filming and Twisters is premiering on July 19, 2024, it might be safe to declare that the action disaster genre is back. Disaster films (that have achieved some sense of notoriety) have sadly been scarce in recent years. However, if more follow the Gerard Butler sequel and Twisters, the genre will hopefully experience the same resurgence as it did during the 1990s.

The cast and crew of Greenland: Migration are scheduled to start filming in April 2024.

Twisters serves as a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster movie Twister, starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. The original film featured storm chasers striving to deploy “Dorothy,” a device that would revolutionize tornado research. However, they must get close enough to a tornado to release it and gather data.

Meanwhile, the story in Twisters will revolve around a new group of storm chasers who also want to learn how to predict and combat tornadoes. The connection (if there is one) between the two movies is unknown, but the sequel is nevertheless exciting for the action disaster genre.

Twisters Could Help Hype Up Gerard Butler’s Greenland Sequel

Many are excited about Twisters because its predecessor, Twister, was a certified hit at the time of its release, having grossed $495.7 million at the box office and receiving positive reviews.

The 1996 film continues to be a popular entry in the disaster genre, resulting in significant hype surrounding its 2024 sequel. However, Greenland didn’t attain the same success as Twister since it premiered in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Greenland was supposed to have a theatrical release, but the pandemic derailed those plans, and the movie went straight to VOD. Consequently, the disaster film didn’t receive much attention despite earning positive reviews.

But if Twisters performs well in the summer of 2024, that would undoubtedly help draw attention to Greenland: Migration. The two movies are in the same genre, meaning those interested in one would likely want to see the other.
