We’re going back to Greenland!

It seems like just yesterday that Gerard Butler and Ric Roman Waugh teamed up for Greenland, one of the best disaster films of the past couple of decades.
However, it has been nearly four years since the arrival of the 2020 thriller about an asteroid bringing on an extinction-level event and sending the world into chaos. And at some point soon, we’ll get to see how things shook out for the family at the center of that story with the long-awaited release of Greenland: Migration.
The long-in-the-works sequel has been something Butler and company have been trying to get off the ground for the past few years, and after an extended period of dormancy, it looks like things are finally picking up for what could be a great franchise. Below is everything we know about the Greenland sequel including its cast, story, and when cameras will start rolling.
WHAT IS THE GREENLAND: MIGRATION RELEASE DATE?
We don’t yet know when Greenland: Migration will arrive in theaters, but there’s a good chance we won’t see it until some time in 2025 at the earliest.
With Hollywood still feeling the effects of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, movies originally slated to release late last year and early this year have been pushed back months, and sometimes a year or more, meaning spots are starting to fill up fast on the 2024 movie schedule.
And considering production hasn’t gotten underway for the Greenland sequel (more on that later), the prospect of a 2024 release seems all the more unlikely.

GREENLAND 2 WILL FOLLOW THE GARRITY FAMILY AS THEY EXIT THE FORTIFIED BUNKER TO START A NEW LIFE IN EUROPE
In the final moments of the Greenland ending, we watched as the Garrity family (played by Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roger Dale Floyd) and other survivors exited the bunker to see a world brought to the brink of destruction by fragments of the planet-killer comet.
And while major cities around the world were wiped off the map, there was still some hope for humanity, as heard in the various radio messages from other secured locations.
According to Deadline, Greenland: Migration will be a continuation of that story and will show the family as they leave the safety of the bunker to embark upon a perilous journey across Europe to find a new home and start a new life for themselves.
GERARD BUTLER AND MORENA BACCARIN ARE RETURNING FOR GREENLAND: MIGRATION

When Greenland: Migration was first announced in June 2021, Deadline reported that the upcoming sequel to the 2020 disaster flick would see the return of its predecessor’s two main leads: Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin as John Garrity and Allison Garrity, respectively.
There hasn’t been any word on if Roger Dale Floyd, the young child actor who portrayed Butler and Baccarin’s on-screen son, Nathan Garrity will be coming back for Greenland 2, but considering just how big of a role he played in the original, it’s hard to imagine the family going on without him.
We haven’t heard if any other characters who survived the initial destruction will be returning for another round of action, but expect to hear more in the coming weeks and months.
DIRECTOR RIC ROMAN WAUGH AND SCREENWRITER CHRIS SPARLING ARE RETURNING FOR GREENLAND: MIGRATION

Also returning for Greenland: Migration are director Ric Roman Waugh and screenwriter Chris Sparling (who co-wrote with Mitchell Lafortune), the core creative team behind the surprise 2020 disaster movie hit, according to Variety. In a statement shared with the outlet, Waugh touched on the impact of the first film when looking toward the franchise’s future:
Greenland spoke to our humanity in the middle of a global catastrophic event, highlighting what people are capable of doing to one another, both good and bad, when it’s life or death.
Greenland: Migration will be the third film project to see a collaboration between Ric Rowan Waugh and actor Gerard Butler, a partnership that also includes 2019’s Angel Has Fallen and the first Greenland movie. The two are also slated to work together on the upcoming Night Has Fallen movie, which was given the greenlight in November 2020, but the project has yet to come to fruition.
PRODUCTION ON GREENLAND: MIGRATION IS SET TO KICK OFF IN APRIL 2024
In February 2024, after nearly two years of radio silence surrounding the status of the project, Deadline reported that production on Greenland: Migration would finally kick off in April with a shoot taking place in the United Kingdom (the first movie was mostly filmed in Atlanta).
The upcoming sequel was first picked up by STX for a whopping $75 million back in July 2021, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which was the biggest deal made at that year’s Cannes Film Festival. However, less than a year later, Variety reported that the film studio had placed the movie in bankruptcy protection. Those issues have now seemingly been worked out and the project is back up and running once more.
HOW TO WATCH THE FIRST GREENLAND MOVIE BEFORE THE SEQUEL COMES OUT

Considering so much time has passed since Greenland was first released back in October 2020, there’s a good chance some have forgotten what the movie was about after watching it way back when, or perhaps missed it entirely.
That being said, now is the perfect time to revisit the end-of-the-world disaster film before Greenland: Migration comes out, as it is currently streaming for anyone with a Max subscription. You can also rent or purchase digital copies of the action flick on Amazon as well.
