Lionsgate Motion Picture Group has retained Keanu Reeves for a potential fifth installment of the John Wick film franchise.

CNN indicates Lionsgate is committed to bringing back Reeves for John Wick 5. This is according to Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Chair Joe Drake, who had this to say when responding to questions regarding an additional John Wick film: “We’re not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise.”

Other major players in the decision-making process have also weighed in, from producer Basil Iwanyk, who said, “if they’ve an organic way back in that doesn’t feel like bulls**t, then there will be a John Wick 5,” to the director of John Wick 4, Chad Stahelski, who said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, “Keanu, if you ask him right now, ‘Would you do John Wick 5?’ He’d be, ‘F**k yeah!’”

The Franchise Expands With Spinoffs Ahead of a Potential Fifth Film

While there is no official statement on when John Wick 5 could begin filming, there are two spin-offs of the John Wick franchise for fans to look forward to, one of which will feature Keanu Reeves’ John Wick. The first spin-off Ballerina features Ana de Armas in the title role as Rooney.

The Ballerina film will focus on Rooney’s search for the people who killed her family, and will take place between the films John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum and John Wick Chapter 4: Consequences. Keanu Reeves will play a major part in the film, which is expected to be released in 2024.

The other spin-off is the crime drama mini-series The Continental: From the World of John Wick and is set to premiere on September 22 of this year nationally on Peacock, and internationally on Prime Video.

This month, Stahelski and Reeves are taking a trip to Japan where it is expected they will have a conversation about John Wick 5 and discuss ideas for the fifth installment’s script.

If all goes well, Stahelski and Lionsgate will begin preparations for the project, such as deciding which set pieces to use and what characters they would like to see return to the world of John Wick or new characters that might make an appearance.

Producer Iwanyck, in regard to this meeting between Reeves and Stahelski, has stated, “That trip to Japan, it’s like waiting for a boat to emerge out of the smoke, but that’s the impetus”. Lionsgate has already grossed over $1 billion with the John Wick franchise.
