The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly decided on a potential reunion with free agent running back Ezekiel Elliott.
More than a month after free agency opened, Ezekiel Elliott met with the Dallas Cowboys this week to discuss a possible second stint together. And it sounds like the two-time rushing champion is indeed on his back to Dallas.
Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports that the 28-year-old Elliott is expected to “rejoin” the Cowboys, with the agreement between the two sides said to be “increasingly imminent.”
The Cowboys lost their top rusher of the last two years, Tony Pollard, to the Tennessee Titans in free agency. The Dallas RB depth chart currently consists of Deuce Vaughn, Rico Dowdle, free agent pickup Royce Freeman and Malik Davis.
As Gehlken noted, the option is there for the Cowboys to draft a running back in day two of the 2024 NFL Draft tonight. Jerry Jones and company have the No. 57, No. 73 and No. 87 selections tonight.
The No. 4 pick of the 2016 NFL Draft spent the 2023 season with the New England Patriots, serving as the No. 2 RB behind Rhamondre Stevenson. The three-time Pro Bowler finished the season with 642 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
For his career, Elliott has 8,904 rushing yards and 71 rushing touchdowns to go along with 356 receptions for 2,649 and 14 receiving touchdowns. Elliott has four 1,000-yard seasons under his belt, having exceeded 800 yards in each of his first seven seasons.
Ezekiel Elliott Can Still Produce As A No. 2 RB
Elliott has been well past his prime for a few years now, but the workhorse veteran can still be a productive rotational player at this phase of his career.
Playing second-fiddle to Stevenson on a lousy New England team last year, Elliott still put up nearly 1,000 yards of offense (955). He’s still one of the best No. 2 running back options the league has to offer, not to mention that Elliott remains one of the best pass-blocking RBs.
