Born Eric Lynn Wright in September 1964, Eazy-E was an American rapper who popularized West Coast rap and gangsta rap. He was one of the founding members of the N.W.A group and its label, Ruthless Records.
Born and raised in Compton, California, Eazy-E had legal troubles before founding his Ruthless Records label in 1987. In the beginning, he had a solo career, yet frequently collaborated with Ice Cube and Dr. Dre.
Eventually, they joined forces and formed N.W.A. Their debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton was released in 1988. Many rappers to this day consider it one of the greatest and most influential albums ever.

Speaking of his early childhood, Wright was born in a Los Angeles suburb noted for high crime rates and gang culture. His father was a postal worker, while his mother was a school administrator. He dropped out of high school in the tenth grade but later received a GED.He supported himself by selling drugs. His manager Jerry Heller recalls Eazy-E selling marijuana, but not cocaine.
By 1986, at the age of 22, he allegedly earned more than $250,000 from dealing drugs. But after his cousin, who was also part of the business, was shot and killed, Wright decided he could make a better living from the hip-hop scene that was growing in popularity.
During the 1980s, he recorded in his parent’s garage, and eventually started Ruthless Records. The original idea came when Wright asked Heller to go into business with him. He suggested a half-ownership company, but it was decided that Wright would get 80% and Heller 20%.
Heller told Wright, “Every dollar comes into Ruthless, I take twenty cents. That’s industry standard for a manager of my caliber. I take twenty, you take eighty percent. I am responsible for my expenses and you’re responsible for yours. You own the company. I work for you”.
Eazy had a successful run with Dre and Ice Cube as NWA, but the split came after Jerry Heller became their manager. Dre recalls, “The split came when Jerry got involved. He played the divide and conquer game. Instead of taking care of everybody, he picked one nigga to take care of and that was Eazy. And Eazy was like, I’m taken care of, so fuck it!”
