Tupac Shakur’s brother Mopreme reacted to the “bittersweet” news Friday that a suspect has been arrested and charged in the late rapper’s 1996 murder.
In a pair of interviews Friday following the apprehension of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, Mopreme told TMZ the arrest was “bittersweet for a number of reasons. The time, of course, 27 years. It didn’t have to be this way, it didn’t have to happen at all. I hate even have to live in the reality that my brother’s not here.”
Tupac’s older brother added “Justice is accountability, that’s the sweet part in the bittersweet. And I’m bracing, ’cause it ain’t over.”
Mopreme said that the Shakur family was “recently” contacted by the Las Vegas Metro Police Department to reiterate that their investigation was still active, but the family weren’t informed of the impending arrest.
“The timing was very curious and I was a little taken aback because this should’ve happened a long time ago,” Mopreme told the New York Post. “[Davis] has said this whole time that he was in the car when his nephew [Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson] shot my brother.”
On Friday, Tupac’s sister Sekyiwa ‘Set’ Shakur, who is president of the rapper’s foundation, wrote on social media, “This is no doubt a pivotal moment. The silence of the past 27 years surrounding this case has spoken loudly in our community,” she wrote. “It’s important to me that the world, the country, the justice system, and our people acknowledge the gravity of the passing of this man, my brother, my mother’s son, my father’s son. His life and death matters, and should not go unsolved or unrecognized, so yes, today is a victory but I will reserve judgement until all the facts and legal proceedings are complete.”
Mopreme echoed his sister’s stance that justice in the case is not done, telling TMZ, “Keep your popcorn, we’re still waiting for things to unfold, the universe is working, Pac is still here. So stay tuned.”
