Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is gearing up for a wide theatrical release on December 22, 2023.  The film starring Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, and Patrick Wilson among others will be the last DCU film before Gunn’s eventual reboot with Superman: Legacy in 2025.

The hype for the film has been comparatively low to the first film due to the many rumors about drama on the set and poor test screenings. Recently various studios submitted their films for shortlisting in various categories for the Oscars and this film managed to make it to the final list.

As reported by Comicbook.com, Barbie, Wonka, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom have been included in the final list submitted by Warner Bros to compete in the Best Visual Effects category at the 2024 Oscars next year. This information may evoke further interest in the yet-to-be-released DCU film and lead to more audiences flocking to the theatres to see the film.

James Wan is returning as director for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, gearing up for release on December 22, 2023. With James Gunn rebooting the DCU from 2025, the character’s future remains uncertain but Wan expressed his openness to return for a third film under one condition.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, the director revealed that he would return for a potential third film if he had the same creative freedom as the last two films. He said,
“I haven’t directed a third movie [in a series] before, so I’d be open to doing another [Aquaman] if I got the same freedom I’ve had on these first two,” Wan said. “I’m not sure what direction [James Gunn and Peter Safran] are going in, though, so who knows? I’ve learned to never say never.”
It has been rumored that Jason Momoa will leave behind Aquaman and play Lobo in Gunn’s DCU. It remains to be seen whether a third film happens in the future or if this second film is indeed the last for the character.
