Think you could make a mouthwatering meal with just $4 worth of ingredients?

Well, serving up some inspiration is New York-based celebrity chef Dan Churchill.

The 34-year-old – who has cooked for everyone from Lindsey Vonn to Chris Hemsworth and currently heads up The Osprey restaurant in Brooklyn – has been hitting the streets of Manhattan and offering his culinary skills to strangers.

In a series of videos posted to TikTok, where Churchill has more than 1.3 million followers, he can be seen entering different apartments and cooking with the meagre range of ingredients he finds – with some outstanding results shocking his hosts.

Dan starts each video by approaching people on the street and asking if they mind him cooking for them in their home.

Obviously, all of the people he features say ‘yes.’

Once he’s got the the go-ahead, Dan quizzes his subjects on their monthly food budgets before he enters their apartments and looks at what ingredients they’ve got to play with.

Some New Yorkers say their monthly grocery budget comes in about $1,500 a month, while others are more frugal, splashing out about $400 to $500 on food supplies.

In one TikTok, Dan enters Monica’s apartment.

The Manhattanite, who works as a dietician, says her food budget is $1,500 a month.

After taking a peek in her fridge, Dan goes about whipping up a meal using eggs, a red onion, some white vinegar, celery, sourdough, pesto, lemon and rice vinegar. He estimates the mix of ingredients comes to $4.16.

Once he’s finished, the chef presents Monica with a ‘breakfast stack’ and she deems it ‘so good’ as she takes a big bite of the oozing egg sandwich.

Stepping things up a level in one TikTok, Dan invites celebrity real estate broker Ryan Serhant to feature in his series.

The property expert, who currently stars on Bravo’s Million Dollar Listing New York, agrees to participate, but he fails to reveal his monthly food budget as he says he has ‘no idea’ what it is.

Dan presents Ryan with a 'next level Greek salad with chicken breast'

From the wide range of ingredients in Ryan’s fridge, Dan opts to use basil, feta cheese, and chicken to make a ‘next level Greek salad’

Dan is clearly blown away by Ryan’s swanky Brooklyn home, and he comments on how it ‘echoes’ when they talk due to the cavernous spaces.

After having a quick tour of the spacious kitchen, which features a giant fridge which is taller than both men, Dan gets to work making a meal.

From the wide range of ingredients in Ryan’s fridge, Dan opts to use basil, feta cheese, lime, garlic, olives, tomatoes, parsley, chicken, and a splash of chardonnay with an estimated spend of $10.29.

After combining the goods together, Dan presents Ryan with a ‘next level Greek salad with chicken breast.’

Ryan looks pleased with the artfully presented dish, but he quips ‘how do I even begin with this thing?’ due to the salad’s tower-like arrangement.

Thanks to his fun cooking antics, Dan has accrued a mass following on TikTok and Instagram with many viewers applauding the ‘cooking for strangers’ concept.

One viewer commented how cooking is a great way of making friends, while another praised Dan’s interpersonal skills, writing: ‘This guy is the most chill person in New York, takes a stranger and makes them his bff.’
