Jason Momoa is fully aware of the tone and potential of Aquaman 3.

"I highly doubt it": Jason Momoa Already Knows How Aquaman 3 Will Pan Out Despite Amber Heard Backlash

Jason Momoa is coming up with the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The film is the sequel to his 2018 hit Aquaman and is the last film in the DCU before the start of James Gunn’s reboot of the brand. The DC brand is currently not in the best of terms with audiences as the last 3 films of the DCU have been total failures. The Aquaman sequel is also not getting much hype and anticipation among fans.

The sequel is coming closer to its release date while rumors and speculations (that are not helping the film in any way) continue to come out about its troubled production and the conflict between Momoa and Amber Heard on sets. Director James Wan had recently said that the film is a fun buddy comedy. Momoa had previously teased a totally different vibe in a possible third installment.

Jason Momoa Says a Potential Aquaman 3 Won’t Be a Comedy

Earlier this year, Jason Momoa was at the Sundance Film Festival to promote his documentary Deep Rising, which narrates the global threat of deep-sea mining and its effect to the world’s oceans. When asked about a potential Aquaman 3 and whether it’ll have a fun tone, he told Variety, “I highly doubt it. I’m too dramatic.”

He continued talking about his pitch for Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom and the serious real-life allusions in the film. He told Variety,

“The beautiful thing [about Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom] is me and my partner wrote the first treatment for it and it was about a 55-page treatment, and a lot of it has to deal with me talking to the U.N. about what’s happening with the melting ice caps.”
Director James Wan also recently talked about the film, telling Empire,
“From the start, I pitched that the first film would be a Romancing The Stone-type thing – an action-adventure romantic comedy – while the second would be an outright buddy comedy. I wanted to do Tango & Cash!”
It is now highly unlikely that a third Aquaman film will be made since James Gunn has his own plans for his DCU which does not include Aquaman as of yet. It remains to be seen how the second film turns out when it releases in December.

Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom was marred with several rumors and speculations about its troubled production, negative test screenings, and a conflict between Momoa and Amber Heard on sets. Director James Wan has refuted those rumors while also saying that the film has turned out the way that he wanted. He told Empire,
“I’ve had to learn to be more Zen in dealing with all the noise around me, for sure. ’m a pretty private person. I don’t get on social media and have fights, but it’s difficult because this narrative has emerged that is not the reality.

The noise is fun to write about, and it gets clicks, but people don’t know the truth. Look, I’m a collaborative filmmaker — I welcome people’s thoughts and opinions. But ultimately, I feel I have more than proven myself. So, it was like: ‘This is the movie I want to make.’”
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom stars Momoa and Heard along with Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 20, 2023.
