Patrick Mahomes showcased his most remarkable deep-ball performance since 2021 for the Chiefs

In the previous season, the Kansas City Chiefs secured a Super Bowl victory despite undergoing a significant overhaul in their wide receiver corps. However, the explosive deep throws that were once a hallmark of their offense, particularly with the absence of Tyreek Hill, had notably diminished.

This season presents an even more formidable challenge, with the offense facing greater struggles. The issues with the receiving corps and overall offensive performance are apparent, emerging as the primary factors hindering the team’s success. If the Chiefs were to confront playoff elimination, it is likely that the offense would shoulder much of the blame, given the comparatively robust performance of their defense throughout the season.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged for the Chiefs in their recent matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, reminiscent of their past prowess in deep-ball plays. While not as explosive as before, they displayed something in that game that had been conspicuously absent for the majority of this season and the previous one – a welcomed sight.

According to Next Gen Stats, Patrick Mahomes completed 2 out of 3 deep-ball passes (20+ air yards) against the Bengals in their Week 17 victory. Yet, the significance of these statistics extends beyond the numbers. Next Gen Stats highlighted the importance of Mahomes’ performance by comparing it to his deep-ball throws to Tyreek Hill in 2021.

One standout moment was Mahomes’ 67-yard completion to Rashee Rice, marking Rice’s first deep reception in his career. Mahomes amassed 108 yards on deep passes that day, going 2 for 3, marking his first game surpassing 100 deep-passing yards since Tyreek Hill’s departure to the Miami Dolphins.

The connection with Rashee Rice brought exhilaration, whether one is a member of the media or a fan. This excitement was particularly poignant considering the numerous struggles faced by the Chiefs’ wide receiver group throughout the year, compounded by overall offensive difficulties.

Despite lingering offensive issues, especially in the red zone, the Chiefs managed to connect on two deep balls in Week 17. The lone missed opportunity, a misplaced pass from Patrick Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling, was an exception. This newfound success in deep-passing can potentially serve as a foundation for the Chiefs’ offense to build upon heading into the playoffs.
