Wolverine has been given his iconic comic-accurate mask in an edit of scenes from the first official trailer for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. Hugh Jackman was confirmed to be reprising his role of James “Logan” Howlett, a.k.a. Wolverine, from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise in the MCU back in September 2022, joining Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool in an epic, cameo-filled multiverse adventure. One of the most exciting aspects of Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine is that he will finally be gifted a comic-accurate, yellow-and-blue superhero costume, something that he never sported in his 17-year-long career in Fox’s X-Men franchise.

While Deadpool & Wolverine’s first official trailer provided a better look at Wolverine’s new, comic-accurate costume, one crucial element of the suit remains unseen. Deadpool & Wolverine’s official merchandise has confirmed that Wolverine will don his iconic mask in the MCU’s Phase 5, but the movie’s trailers haven’t yet put this accessory on display. Professional VFX artist Taran Singh rectified this by editing several scenes from Deadpool & Wolverine’s trailer to imagine what Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine might look like in his legendary cowl, and the result is nothing short of spectacular, helping to raise excitement for the highly-anticipated 2024 project.

20th Century Fox never really provided its various X-Men teams with comic-accurate superhero suits, though there were some exceptions. Deadpool and Deadpool 2 saw Ryan Reynolds don a comic-accurate costume after the antihero’s controversial adaptation in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and these films also made Colossus, Juggernaut and Cable more comic-accurate, too. 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse also ended with the core X-Men team sporting more comic-accurate outfits, but these were hastily removed for the team’s next appearance in Dark Phoenix in favor of bland uniforms. Marvel Studios’ Deadpool & Wolverine will change this, spelling good news for the MCU’s official X-Men debut.

The fact that Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will finally wear a comic-accurate costume in Deadpool & Wolverine, and the fact that it doesn’t actually look ridiculous on-screen, means that the MCU’s upcoming X-Men team could also get comic-accurate suits. The X-Men will be completely reinvented for their MCU debut, and Marvel Studios giving the X-Men comic-accurate costumes would be the perfect way to distance this new iteration from Fox’s previous adaptations. It’s unclear who will be included in the MCU’s X-Men team, but seeing the likes of Cyclops, Storm, Rogue and Jean Grey in comic-accurate suits is a very exciting prospect.

Marvel Studios has always done a fantastic job at modernizing some of the most outlandish and ridiculous superhero costumes from Marvel Comics, so the X-Men’s costumes will surely be no exception. More focus has been put on giving MCU heroes comic-accurate costumes in recent years, with the likes of Hawkeye, Sam Wilson’s Captain America, the Scarlet Witch and Spider-Man, among many others, getting new garbs in the Multiverse Saga. Deadpool & Wolverine has already been shown to be giving Wolverine and others, including Pyro, new costumes, so even more comic-accurate suits must be on the horizon for the MCU’s future.
