The Witcher fans torn over ‘awkward’ footage that explains why Henry Cavill left Netflix show

The Witcher fans believe some “awkward” interview footage explains why Henry Cavill left the Netflix TV show.

It’s a shame what has happened to The Witcher TV show. The Netflix live-action adaptation started off strongly with its first season and while there were a few inconsistencies with the source material for the most part it impressed fans.

When season 2 rolled around it was a different story, and when season 3 aired in two parts fans were pretty much done with the series. They weren’t the only ones either as Henry Cavill, who played Geralt himself, had announced the third season would be his last. He’s now passed the swords and white wig over to Liam Hemsworth and while Hemsworth has been putting a lot of time into researching the role by reading the books, it hasn’t stopped fans from relentlessly attacking him.

The fourth season of The Witcher is set to drop sometime in 2025 provided it’s not cancelled, and while they wait with pitchforks and torches in hand, fans have been speculating what made Cavill leave the show in the first place.

While it could just be that he was tired of the work and wanted to move onto another project many believe it was the story straying so far from the books that caused the departure.

A tweet from mofromyt showed a clip of Cavill in an interview with series showrunner Lauren Hissrich who’s said she found the actor to be “really annoying” due to his insistence on staying true to the source material.

In the clip Hissrich talks about injecting comedy to the series to lighten the darker tone, with a popular example being Geralt’s solemn goodbye to his horse Roach being interrupted for the sake of comedy.

Fans said “I don’t blame him for walking away,” and believe future seasons will be rock bottom for the show without Cavill there to keep viewers engaged.

The Witcher director explains why Henry Cavill left the show

A previous director of The Witcher show on Netflix has addressed the reason why Henry Cavill stepped away from future seasons.

The Witcher recently wrapped up its two-part third season, and fans are still lamenting the loss of Henry Cavill as the show’s lead.

Take a look at season three of The Witcher below.

Cavill’s departure from the character of Geralt was highly unexpected, especially given the actor’s immense passion and love for the series of books and games.

He’s made that passion very clear over the past few years, specifically referencing his many adventures in The Witcher 3, a game he’s played several times. He’s even admitted to choosing Yennefer as Geralt’s love interest every single playthrough, which is a level of commitment we can’t help but respect.

Nevertheless, Cavill recently gave an emotional farewell message to the fans who’d supported him and his fellow cast members, before hanging up the sword and Geralt wig for good. The show will go on though, with Liam Hemsworth stepping in to replace him, much to the dismay of fans who are threatening to boycott the show, and are urging Netflix to cancel before its fourth season.

While Henry Cavill’s departure led to heartbreaks everywhere, it also started a wave of conspiracy theories as to why he left the show in the first place. Some speculated it was because the show has made several changes to the source material, so much so that Cavill couldn’t accept continuing if it wasn’t closer to the original story.

Luckily, fan rumours and theories can presumably be put to bed as one of the show’s directors, Marc Jobst, recently spoke with Screen Rant, and has given their take on why Cavill left.

Jobst said: “Henry has done three series, these are demanding shows to make, you know, they are huge. Henry does every single beat of his stunts, he won’t even allow a hand … You’re working with an incredible athlete, first and foremost, who works out hours before, and hours after, you’ve been shooting for 12 hours, and who cares deeply about the work that he does.”

Admittedly, this answer makes the most sense, as while I’m sure Cavill would have preferred the story to mirror the books as closely as possible, he’s an actor who understands the importance of adapting something for a modern audience. It also sounds like it takes a lot of work to be a Witcher, so it’s unsurprising he’d want to bow out after three seasons.

There’s currently no news on when we can expect season four, though filming will supposedly begin in 2024, so we could be looking at a late 2024/early 2025 release.

The Witcher: ‘awkward’ clip showing why Henry Cavill left surfaces online

An awkward video clip featuring an interview with The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Henry Cavill has gone viral.

Rumours of conflict between Cavill and Hissrich have been rife. While some believed that Cavill left the role as Geralt of Rivia to play the now cancelled Man of Steel sequel, the general consensus is that he left due to creative differences with Hissrich.

While we can only speculate on that gossip, the recent viral video could be quite telling, reading between the lines and with the added context of speculation. That being said, Hissrich has previously labelled Cavil as being ‘really annoying’.

As reported by Giantfreakinrobot.com, the viral clip in question features some very awkward side-eye between Cavill and Hissrich. The conversion during the clip is seemingly regarding plans to kill Geralt’s beloved steed, Roach.

Hissrich mentions that The Witcher isn’t just about the important and special people in the world, it’s about everyone else as well. She then proceeds to talk about how ‘real’ people cope in difficult situations “with humour”, apparently.

Now, before we proceed, I’m about to go into spoiler territory for season two of The Witcher Netflix series. So consider this your spoiler warning!

In season two of The Witcher, Geralt’s loyal steed, Roach died. It was a tragically heartwarming scene and one that Henry Cavill played brilliantly. Initially, Hissrich wanted to turn this into a meta-comedy scene with Geralt simply acquiring a new horse and naming it Roach, again. This is something that happens in the games and books.

However, Cavill wanted to do something different, something that will pull at the heartstrings of the audience and to be honest, I think I much prefer what Cavill came up with.

“Henry was so unhappy with the line,” Hissrich explained at the time. “Finally I said, ‘You know what, you come up with something. I trust you, you know this material so well, you know the book so well, you don’t even have to pitch it to me.’ And he came back the next day with a beautiful speech that’s at the end of Sword of Destiny when Geralt is facing death and it’s such a pitch-perfect moment.”

Following the death of Roach, here is the line that Cavill wrote for Geralt: “Enjoy your last walk across the meadow and through the mist. Be not afraid of her for she is your friend.”

With that added context, the clip that has gone viral has more meaning and you don’t have to put two and two together when you see the frustration on the faces of Henry Cavill and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, as well as the death stare exchange.

Season three of The Witcher will be Henry Cavill’s last on the Netflix series. Then for season four, Liam Hemsworth will be stepping into the shoes of Geralt of Rivia. Season three of The Witcher Netflix series is expected to air this summer.

The Witcher: Henry Cavill bids emotional farewell to cast

The Witcher star Henry Cavill has shared an emotional goodbye with his co-stars, thanking them for the time spent working together.

Cavill recently announced his departure from the series, in which he played the Witcher himself, Geralt of Rivia – a character he loves deeply from reading the books and repeatedly playing the increasingly popular The Witcher 3 in his spare time. The role of Geralt will be recast following the finale of the show’s third season, which is split into two-parts, the first premiering on 29 June, and the second on 27 July. Liam Hemsworth will then take on the mantle for season four, as well as the recently announced season five.

Take a look at the trailer for season three below.

Hemsworth’s casting hasn’t gone down well with fans who are threatening to boycott the series, in addition to review-bombing the new season alongside launching a campaign for Cavill to return – or even for the show to be cancelled entirely due to his absence.

Henry Cavill recently attended a press event for the upcoming season, where they addressed his departure directly. A heartfelt goodbye was given by Cavill who thanked the cast for his time on the show. He said: “I actually just want to talk about my co-stars here, because once again it was such a pleasure and an honour to be working with you guys. You guys bring so much nuance and detail to these characters, which are often at risk of being oversimplified, and what you guys have done with the characters has involved work, care, and effort … So, [I] just want to say I’m gonna miss you. I’m gonna miss you very much.”

The actor’s co-stars were equally as shocked about Cavill’s exit from the show, with Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer, recently saying it was “hard to take” due to him being such an enormous part of the show. Henry Cavill will now be moving onto his next adventure, starring and directing in an Amazon show about the Warhammer: 40K series, which is another one of his passions.

The third season of The Witcher will be fully-available to stream on Netflix by 29 July.

Henry Cavill picks Yennefer every Witcher 3 playthrough

Henry Cavill picks up Yennefer of Vengerberg every time during a playthrough of CDPRs The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Yennefer or Triss? An age-old question asked since the dawn of time. Well, actually, that question has probably been asked by most since 2011 following the release of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, but you get my drift.

It’s a quite known fact that Man of Steel star, Henry Cavill is a massive fan of The Witcher, whether it’s the Andrzej Sapkowski novels or the video game franchise from CD Projekt Red. In fact, it is reported that Cavill was so keen to play Geralt of Rivia, that he annoyed the showrunner of the Netflix adaptation, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Though we’re with you, Mr Cavill.

What’s more, during the lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cavill used his isolated time very wisely by finishing The Witcher 3 on its hardest setting. Well played Mr Cavill, well played.

So it’s safe to assume during the lockdown period, Yennefer seemingly became Henry Cavill’s digital love interest in the world of The Witcher 3. As reported by TheGamer (via Digital Spy), Henry Cavill was asked whether he was a Triss Merigold or Yennefer of Vengerberg kinda guy.

“For me, when I played the games, and especially when I read the [Sapkowski’s] books, it’s always been… I feel true to Geralt’s core that it’s team Yennefer,” the actor replied. “Of course, the great thing about the games is that you can do whatever you want, but for me — even in the games — team Yennefer.”

In related news, season three of The Witcher series on Netflix will be Cavill’s last before Chris Hemsworth assumes the role of Geralt of Rivia. I know, we’re sad too. While spoilers are being kept air-tight, Cavill’s final scene as Geralt is already being described as heartbreaking.

Season three of The Witcher is expected to premiere on Netflix this summer.
